Caring for the Family Experiencing Perinatal Loss Hopes and dreams are part of every pregnancy, but for some, their dreams don’t come true. Each year, over half a million dreams are shattered by early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or newborn death. In this lesson you will learn the definitions, statistics, and unique aspects of pregnancy loss, stillbirth, and newborn death; common myths and misconceptions related to perinatal loss; and a Standard of Care for perinatal loss. In addition, you will learn what bereaved parents find helpful in coping with their loss. |
Communicating with the Bereaved Upon completion of this course, students will be able to identify the key components of sensitive communication, (i.e., nonverbal and verbal), describe three common types of responses or categories of communication with the bereaved, demonstrate awareness of what to say and not say when conversing with the bereaved, and apply cultural sensitivity into communication with the bereaved. |
Theoretical Framework of Grief This course covers the definitions of grief, mourning, and bereavement as well as myths associated with grief. Students will learn to identify the phases of bereavement and dimensions of grief, develop self-awareness regarding their values and beliefs about death, and will learn to identify risk factors for complicated grief. Finally, students will learn about the cardinal rules of grief support. |
